In past columns I’ve written about leadership, values, core business ethics and community support. It seems fitting, on the cusp of Remembrance Day — a day set aside to remember the fallen heroes of war— to reflect on the many opportunities, freedoms, and quality of life our society enjoys.
Without the fearless efforts of those men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of conflict, war, and peace, the very essence of our Canadian way of life would be at risk.
This day of commemoration calls for us to remember and respect the sacrifices made by many to protect generations of Canadians.
The freedom that we enjoy and of-ten take for granted, weaves the very fabric of our sovereign nation. Democracy allows our citizens social, economic and cultural freedoms and equalities that many other countries can only dream about.
At this time of reverent remembrance, perhaps business owners, managers, employees, and political leaders should take inventory of our civil and civic liberties to ensure the valiant efforts of others are not blurred by complacency and indifference.
From conversations with some Chamber members, it seems that each day from their storefront be-gins a new battle. They navigate mine fields of government regulations, employee/customer conflicts, and a roller coaster of economic uncertainty. Over and above these challenges, owners must ensure good profit margins, upward growth, and a positive bottom line. How ready and willing are we to get into the trenches ourselves in order to accomplish our mission?
As General George S. Patton, Jr. once said: “It is only by doing things others have not that one can advance”. This adage is as true about business as it is about war. In order to progress and win within the business battlefield, companies must understand their threats, identify their critical goals, explore alliances, and employ a plan of attack to deliver results.
Recently the Greater Fort Erie Chamber of Commerce was able to recognize the achievements of some of our community’s out-standing businesses at our Business Excellence Awards. The recipients of these awards have demonstrated an ability to stand out from the pack, to think outside the box, and leverage pioneering opportunities. Indeed, these innovative and hard-working citizens humbly accepted the accolades while admitting credit was also due in part to their dedicated employees, management teams, understanding family members, and loyal customers.
As the Voice of Business, the Chamber was delighted to provide a platform from which to recognize such business excellence. It is our mission to provide professional development, networking, advocacy, and promotional opportunities which will help maneuver the business community into a position of success.
